What is Vehicle Telemetry?

For those who have heard the term but aren’t aware: Telemetry involves the automatic measurement and wireless transmission of data from vehicles to a central system. In the context of vehicles, it means capturing details such as speed, location, acceleration, rider/driver behaviour braking patterns, and engine diagnostics. The ONE MOTO vehicles are equipped with a variety of sensors that gather and transmit these metrics to cloud-based platforms. Yet, pre-existing vehicles which don’t have this technology need to be retro-fitted, but that’s OK. We have that covered.

This data is highly valuable, it provides insight into driving behaviour, vehicle performance, and traffic conditions. By tracking these metrics, manufacturers and fleet operators can identify patterns indicating potential hazards or risky driving behaviours. This real-time data becomes the foundation for AI systems designed to help prevent accidents.

The UAE can offer the safest road network in the world

The benefits:

Roads and Transport Authorities: A complete over-arching understanding of how the roads are being used, and the vehicles using them. The aggregated data, over time will also be able to predict traffic patterns, assess road quality/damage and (if needed) monitor and manage the correct, safe parameters for these roads.

Fleet Operators: Full access to fleet and rider management, vehicle performance, maintenance scheduling and predictive maintenance. Reducing operational costs, improving operating margins and providing a safer environment for their riders and drivers.

Delivery Aggregators/Platforms: Although many are positioned as a tech company, the orchestrator between customer and producer, they have their in-house data, rich in consumer buying patterns, behaviours and equipping them with the tools to increase Average Transaction Value (ATV). They currently don’t have the secret sauce, but the recipe is nearly complete – telemetry – understanding the vehicles and fleet operations of their third party logistics suppliers and partners will allow them to optimise routes, reduce working hours of their ‘couriers’, create micro-zones for delivery and increase the per hour order volumes.

Delivery Riders and Drivers: These workers do face the brunt end of the deal. When fuel prices increase they pay more, when they have servicing downtime, it’s on their dime. If the orders aren’t available (over supplied riders) their delivery volumes decrease, resulting in them working longer hours, to achieve their daily target. Telemetry in their vehicles optimises their job, manages their workflow, supports them and their safety and decreases their cost of operations – saving over 29% of their gross annual salary.

How it benefits the consumer and delivery aggregator: The greatest KPI is the speed of which the product/item.food gets delivered. A highly marketed sales trigger tapping into the ‘hangry’ on demand, the ‘delivery of everything, now’ customer.

Artificial intelligence takes telemetry data and interprets it to make split-second decisions based on what it “observes.” With advanced algorithms, AI can process large amounts of information quickly, recognise patterns, and predict possible outcomes. For example, an AI system might assess the likelihood of a collision by examining driving habits, current road conditions, or even the time of day.

When combined, AI and telemetry make a powerful team. Systems such as advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) can monitor elements like lane positioning and surrounding traffic. These AI-powered systems can issue warnings, apply brakes, or adjust steering to avoid potential accidents. Acting as a vigilant co-pilot, AI offers an extra layer of safety beyond human capacity.

Telemetry systems excel in real-time monitoring by continuously sending data that alerts safety systems. If an unexpected event occurs, such as sudden braking or swerving, the telemetry system can identify this as a high-risk situation. AI can then evaluate it in real time, notifying the driver or dispatching emergency assistance if necessary. This approach ensures rapid response, even if the driver is incapacitated or unaware of the danger.

Additionally, some AI systems can detect signs of fatigue or distraction. If telemetry reveals erratic lane-keeping or prolonged periods without steering input, the AI might interpret this as drowsiness and recommend a rest break. Since fatigue is a leading cause of vehicle accidents, these alerts can be critical in preventing crashes.

When I started ONE MOTO, I wanted it to be more than an electric vehicle brand. I envisioned a venture standing for something meaningful, something making a positive difference in this little planet of ours. Core to this vision are the values of integrity, sustainability, and community. These principles guide every decision I make and shape the way we operate daily.

Aligning with ONE MOTO

This wasn’t the smoothest of routes four years ago, many companies hadn’t built their business upon values (opting for the antiquated mission statement of projecting many words without delivering real meaning), so we needed to communicate our new approach in an industry later transitioning from automotive to mobility. Seismic in task and dichotomy with the question “is this needed or a nice to have? Will the portrayal of our values and approach really be heard and appreciated by our audience?”. Six months after launching, the Universe answered the question for us, presenting one visionary customer, sharing the same leadership beliefs and drive ‘to bring change,’ here’s what they had to say;

“In my quest to find partners who share my values, ONE MOTO stood out. Their commitment to sustainability isn’t a marketing gimmick – it’s a fundamental aspect of their operations as they prioritise eco-friendly technologies and processes, aiming to reduce the carbon footprint of every delivery, improving wellbeing of the rider community and understanding the operations to craft profit increasing simulations for their customers. Adam also showed me how they had built an ESG pledge into their DNA (bold for any company let alone a start up). This alignment of values was crucial for me; I need to know that my suppliers are just as dedicated to making a positive impact as I am. Partnering with them means that every product we deliver contributes to this larger goal of environmental stewardship.

Our pledge, also resonates with our customers. More than ever, people want to support businesses reflecting their values as they care about how products are made, how they are delivered, and the overall impact of their consumption. Before writing this article, I asked a few of our customers to contribute their thoughts and one, I hadn’t expected to be able to share the time responded with this, “My decision to partner with ONE MOTO is a testament to my dedication to a sustainable future. In recent years, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has witnessed a seismic shift in consumer behaviour, driven by technological advancements and changing lifestyles and there’s no denying COVID-19 played a leading role!

This transformation has propelled the food and e-commerce delivery sector into the spotlight, with an unprecedented surge in demand for convenient and efficient delivery services. As the industry continues to evolve, navigating the intricacies of delivery volumes, costs, and forecasted growth becomes essential for businesses operating in this dynamic landscape.

Explosive Growth in Delivery Volumes

The UAE’s food and e-commerce delivery sector has experienced exponential growth, fuelled by a burgeoning population thanks to the vision and invitational platform for the world to explore, increasing urbanisation across the Emirates, and a relentless appetite for convenience. Recent statistics project that the UAE’s food last-mile delivery market will reach a value of USD 2.2 billion by 2025, growing at a compound annual rate of 14.2% from 2020 to 2025.

Similarly, the e-commerce sector has witnessed a remarkable uptick in delivery volumes, with online retail sales in the UAE expected to surpass USD 31 billion by Q4 this year largely due to the prominent marketplaces like Temu and Shein. The COVID-19 pandemic has further accelerated this surge in demand, prompting consumers to embrace online shopping and home delivery services at an unprecedented pace.

Cost Impact and Operational Cause

While the growth prospects for the food and e-commerce delivery sector in the UAE are promising, businesses face a myriad of challenges, particularly concerning delivery costs and operational efficiency. Fluctuating fuel prices, labour expenses, and infrastructure investments exert pressure on delivery service providers and fleet operators to streamline operations and optimise costs without compromising service quality. The multiple stakeholders are affected at varying degrees with a responsibility to their riders being a factor (profit vs welfare).

Recent studies indicate that the average (all-inclusive/aggregated stakeholder) cost per delivery in the UAE ranges from AED 20 to AED 50, depending on various factors such as distance, delivery speed, CaC, servicing and maintenance and order volume (with customers seeing a AED 7-AED 20 price, plus ‘service fee’). However, achieving profitability remains a significant challenge for many delivery businesses, especially in light of fierce competition and evolving consumer expectations.

Forecasted Growth and Market Opportunities

Despite the challenges, the future outlook for the food and e-commerce delivery sector in the UAE remains optimistic, driven by technological innovation, demographic trends, and shifting consumer preferences. Industry analysts expect sustained growth in delivery volumes, driven by leading operators setting market milestones, adopting digital payments, and proliferating delivery platforms.

Furthermore, the emergence (approximately five years ago) of new delivery models, such as dark kitchens cloud kitchens, and autonomous delivery vehicles, presents exciting opportunities for businesses to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and cater to evolving consumer demands. With the UAE government’s continued focus on digital transformation and infrastructure development, the stage is set for continued expansion and innovation in the delivery sector.

As ONE MOTO – Electric Vehicles pioneered two-wheeled electric vehicles in the GCC, generating a market leader presence was tough, a tremendous amount of knowledge sharing (by all stakeholders) in the value chain. Fleets Cause and Affect EV Demand.

We welcome this, have built fleet solutions because of this. With the recent revision to theEV incentives and governmental mobility strategies, we wanted to share some insights of how fleet operators can address the curve, adopt change before it’s imposed.

The last-mile landscape globally is seeing a 27% YoY growth, with many delivery aggregators being folded up, acquired or winding up. Profitability and efficiencies seem to be the key drivers, yet the solutions are already in the market.

Role of Fleets in Driving Electric Vehicle Demand

United Kingdom – It has been emphasised that fleets will play a pivotal role in meeting zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) targets, especially in the absence of a significant surge in consumer interest in electric vehicles (EVs).

In 2023, fleets accounted for nearly two-thirds (64%) of all new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) registered and over half of all new registrations in the UK.

“Given the ZEV mandate, a shifting product mix from OEMs, and other factors, there’s a pressing need to find buyers for the increasing number of EVs. Unless there’s a sudden and substantial change in consumer preferences, fleets will continue to bear the brunt of this responsibility.”

Our projections for 2024 suggest a relatively stable year for new registrations, underscoring the vital role that fleets play in shaping EV demand and subsequently influencing their presence in the used vehicle market.

We share the belief fleets are poised to drive this transition forward, particularly as manufacturers are offering incentives to us. Despite the Government’s decision to postpone the ban on new internal combustion engine (ICE) sales to 2035 (UK), there’s still a challenge in changing retail perceptions. Fleets, by providing a significant portion of vehicles to the secondary market and introducing drivers to EVs, are instrumental in this shift.

A complete shift to an agency model could mean a less personalised approach for smaller fleets, as they may now have to negotiate with major OEMs directly.

How does this impact the UAE market?

In the UAE we anticipate a collective desire for stability across the automotive sector. Economic and political uncertainties pose challenges for all industry stakeholders, including fleets.

With more and more 3rd Party Logistics (3PLs), Fleet Operators and Fleet Managers working on extremely narrow margins without receiving the volume commitments for aggregators, many are looking to reduce their costs of fleet onboarding. Yet, is it the correct approach to keep looking at cost-saving? Or is there an argument for addressing the increase of profitability?

At ONE MOTO, we believe there is a balance of both, hence why we’ve brought Lease-To-Own models for fleet operators, making our electric delivery vehicles cheaper than the cost of their petrol counterpart.

To ONE MOTO Sustainability is more than a buzzword, it’s one of our five values. We are more than a Sustainable mobility brand, our DNA is made up of a series of commitments aligned with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. As it’s the start of a new year, we’re committing our pledge to the environment, our stakeholders and partners. This series of articles will be demonstrating our measurable ambitions and achievements.

Recently, I was introduced to an incredible team of ‘Sustainabilists’, led by Alexandra Smith and Michael Penrose from The Sustainability Group, FuturePlus based in the UK. They’ve created a business to support other businesses with their sustainable agendas and allowing them measurable metrics of achievements and ambitions.

As many of you would have witnessed at last year’s COP26 many of the world’s leaders were discussing global agendas with a troubling task of aligning goals, objectives and directives, my personal take home was one word, “action” very eloquently delivered in a speech from Hon. John F Kerry. Which got me thinking, “what is our pledge and how can we take action?

Before COP27 in Egypt and COP28 hosted in the UAE, the team and I sat to discuss measurable ambitions and help demonstrate to the world how ‘The UAE take action whilst others talk’ not undermining the audacious complex task ahead, instead the purpose is to bring change to the forefront of our customers, stakeholders and you reading this.

Working closely with FuturePlus we’ll outlining our goals, and transparently showcasing how we, as one small business are committing to a future.

Becoming an ever more sustainable company is a constant journey. For us, it requires taking a broader look at sustainability and social impact. We truly believe that acting as a responsible business – one which is fully committed to positive social and environmental impact – will result in us becoming more resilient and adaptable.

Following on from the shared sentiment of FuturePlus, “Sustainability is a practice that evolves within a company. It is a sense of responsibility that requires taking a look at all its business practices through the lens of sustainability and social impact.
